1. Location & Placement

An aquarium can be part of the decor of any room, but should be kept away from direct sunlight (causes excess algae), drafts and heat vents (cause temperature fluctuations). Aquarium stands provide stable, sturdy support and come in a variety of styles. Some household furniture may support an aquarium, but make sure it is strong (aquariums weigh nearly 10 lbs. per gallon when filled), flat and level. Also be aware that placing an aquarium on anything other than a commercial aquarium stand may void its warranty. If placing the aquarium against a wall (as most are), allow enough room for the power filter to hang on the back of the tank without touching the wall.

It is sometimes necessary to shim the stand (place pieces of wood or cardboard under one or more corners) to level it. If a carpenter's level is not readily available, put the aquarium on the stand and add about 1" of water. The water should reach approximately the same high above the lower tank trim at all four corners.

If it doesn't, place thin pieces of wood, folded cardboard or other material under the lower corners of the stand and check again. Repeat until all levels are close to identical.
