We've sold quite a few of these de-icers in the last few years, and have had an overall good response. They are powerful enough to keep a fairly large "breather hole" in the ice, and even enough to melt their way through a few inches of existing ice on istallation. That power (1250 watts) does add up a bit on your electrical bill, though. It also means that extension cords should not be used, and that the electrical circuit it gets plugged into should be able to handle the 1250 watts. It is also important to keep the aluminum lower half of the unit clean, as it builds up scale which insulates the heater, causing it to shut down prematurely.
